Nine of Telemacus's children and his brother Hezekiah on a list of communicants at Sharon Presbyterian Church

Martha Alexander was born in September of 1822.1 She is most likely the Martha Ann Alexander listed several times in church records along with her siblings.2 On February 8, 1853, James Sample and William N. Alexander, Martha's brother, signed a marriage bond in Mecklenburg County, and James and Martha were given a marriage license to present to a minister or Justice of the Peace.3

A year and a half later, Sharon Church records show a James Sample, deceased August 27, 1854.4 By the 1860 census, Martha Sample was back on the family farm, living with several of her siblings.5 In 1868, her sister Mary was married at her home6, and in the 1870 census, she was listed in the household of her brother Silas Washington.7

In the 1850 census a James Sample, age 28, was an overseer in the household of Silas and Nancy Alexander,8 Silas being the brother of Telemacus. James Sample also appears in a list of Sharon Church members, adjacent to William and Elizabeth Sample.9 In 1850 one of Silas's neighbors, Sarah Sample, 65, is head of a household with William, 23, Elizabeth, 18, and others.10 North Carolina marriage records show a bond for William Sample and Sally Smith on January 17, 1804.11 So it is possible that Martha Alexander's husband was the son of William and Sarah Sample, a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church, and employed by her uncle Silas.
