Franco D’Alessandro will be at The Actor's Center -Roma for two weeks of Master Classes in Dramatic Text Analysis

Before an actor or director can approach a play (particularly a drama) there needs to be a profound understanding of the writing as a piece of theatrical literature. It is crucial to achieve a nuanced and complex understanding of the play’s setting, characters, plot and conflict, and eventually the themes addressed in the work, before one can move forward to begin to perform the piece as it was intended. These courses in text analysis will allow students to gain this essential insight and understanding of the dramatic texts.

The Roman Spring of Tennessee Williams

This course will focus on the two plays the great playwright wrote for his muse and friend Anna Magnani: “The Rose Tattoo” and “Orpheus Descending”.

An in-depth analysis of both plays from various perspectives: author’s message, major themes and motifs, understanding the setting and plot, understanding the characters’ motivations. Setting, which is to say the keen sense of time and place that is so very key to understanding Williams’ works, will be examined in great detail: the social and economic factors of the time and place wherein the drama is set. This will be an eye opening course for all students but especially non-American students for it will allow them to understand the psychological landscape of the setting of the plays, and in particular what that meant for the Italian immigrant population in the 1940s and 1950s. There will also a brief background about the playwright Tennessee Williams and the time he spent in Rome.

Two Great American Plays: “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “Death of a Salesman”

Considered the two greatest plays of the last 100 years, this course offers an in-depth analysis of two of America’s greatest dramatic works.

This intensive lecture course offers actors, writers, directors an detailed look at the characters, their motivations and actions as well as analysis of theme and greater human/social meaning. The course will offer students (both Italian and American) a particular insight into the American experience by detailed discussion of the economic, social and political landscape of America at work during the time and place that these plays are set. A close examination of the setting of the plays will allow students to truly understand the play as both a modern classic drama as well as a timeless moral piece of theatrical literature.

Franco D’Alessandro is an award winning playwright and teacher. He is the author of the internationally acclaimed play “Roman Nights” (about Tennessee Williams and Anna Magnani) and such plays as “Waiting Station”, “Love Gun”, and “Mothers’ Day” and “The Shattering”. Mr. D’Alessandro he holds a B.A degree in theater communications and M.A. degree in Teaching Literature and Drama.

Prima che un attore od un regista possa avvicinarsi ad un'opera teatrale drammatica si deve essere una profonda conoscenza della scrittura come parte della letteratura drammatica. E' fondamentale avvicinare una sfumata e complessa conoscenza dello scenario della commedia, dei personaggi, della trama e conflitto, ed eventualmente dei temi sviluppati nel lavoro, prima che si possa iniziare a interpretare il pezzo cosi` come si intende. Franco D'Alessandro, commediografo e professore, permettera` gli studenti di acquisire questo essenziale intuito e conoscenza dei testi drammatici.

La Primavera Romana di Tennesse Williams

Questo corso si focalizzera`su due commedie che il grande commediografo scrisse per la sua musa ed amica Anna Magnani: "La Rosa Tatuata" e "La Discesa di Orfeo".

Una analisi nel profondo di entrambe le commedie da varie prospetive: il messaggio dell'autore, i temi e motivi piu` importanti, comprensione dell'ambientazione e della trama, comprensione delle motivazioni dei personaggi. Lo scenario, che indica l'intenso senso del tempo e del luogo che e`proprio la chiave per comprendere le opere di Williams, sara` esaminato molto dettagliatamente: i fattori sociali ed economici del tempo e del luogo dove si svolge il dramma. Questo sara` un corso aperto a tutti gli studenti ma soprattutto agli studenti non americani cui sara`ermesso di capire il panorama psicologico dello scenario delle commedie, ed in particolare cio`e significava per la popolazione immigrante italiana negli anni '40 e '50. Ci sara` anche una breve introduzione riguardo il commediografo Tennessee Williams ed il tempo che lui trascorse a Roma.

La ragione di questa accoppiata e` perche le commedie hanno protagoniste entrambe italiane, e La Rosa Tatuata, in particolare, ha molti ruoli secondari per attori italiani ed italo-americani.

Due Grande Commedie Americane: "Un tram che si chiama Desiderio" e "Morte di un Commesso Viaggiatore"

Considerate le due piu` grandi commedie degli utlimi 100 anni, questo corso offre una profonda analisi delle due piu` grandi opere drammatiche Americane.

Questo corso intensivo offre ad attori, scrittori, registi uno sguardo dettagliato sui personaggi, sulle loro motivazioni ed azioni oltre all'analisi del tema e del piu` grande significato umano/sociale. Il corso offrirgli studenti italiani e agli studenti non americani un quadro particolare dell'esperienza americana grazie ad una dettagliata discussione del panorama economico, sociale e politico dell'America nel periodo di queste commedie. Un esame dettagliato dello scenario delle commedie permettergli studenti di capire veramente la commedia sia come dramma classico moderno sia come parte morale della letteratura teatrale senza tempo.

E' l'autore della commedia acclamata in tutto il mondo "Notti Romane" (riguardo Tennesse Williams ed Anna Magnani) e di commedie come "Waiting Station", "Love Gun", e "Mother's Day" e "The Shattering". Mr. D'Alessandro, che e` nato a New York City e cresciuto anche in Italia, parla Inglese ed Italiano e venne prodotto e pubblicato a 26 anni. Possiede una Laurea in comunicazioni del teatro ed una M.A Laurea in Insegnamento della Letteratura e della Drammaturgia.
