Founded in 1975, Danza Floricanto/USA is the oldest existing professional Mexican folk dance troupe in Los Angeles. As professional dancers, singers, and musicians their purpose is to preserve Mexican culture, validate it as a cultural and artistic expression of the Latino people in the American Southwest, and create awareness and appreciation for it through live performance.

Under the artistic direction of Gema Sandoval since it's founding, the company presents authentically staged, fully researched and colorfully costumed dances representing the folkloric traditions of 17 different states of Mexico.

However, in 1991 Sandoval began to add theme works to Floricanto's repertory. On that year, they premiered the full evening work, Epopeya Mestiza (Mestizo Epic), two hours of dance, music, theater, and song reflecting the bold and powerful expressions of the Mexican people over five centuries. Since then she has added:

- American Tropical (1993) a celebration of the influence of the Afro-Caribbean tradition in Mexico.

- California de Ayer, Hoy y Siempre (1994) (California of Yesteryear, Today and Always)

- Huapangos (1995) set to the Pablo Moncayo music of the same name.

- Boleros - Recuerdos de Una Morena (1996) (Memories of a Dark Girl)

- Cuentos Mestizos (1997) an evening of Mexican folk tales.

- Si Se Puede - Yes You Can (1998) a work inspired by the life of a labor activist and United Farm Workers's founder Cesar Chavez, which was named among 1998's 10 best dance program by the L.A. Weekly.

- Family Secrets - Mothers & Daughters (1999) about the passing on of traditions

- Fandango Angeleno (1999) a reflection on today's L.A.

- Zapateados y Taconeos - The Full Story (1999) an essay on Mexican folk dance footwork.
