Our second issue features an article by Trebor J. Tichenor ragtime historian, performer, and composer who provides us his remembrances of meeting Mr. Arthur Marshall composer, collaborator and friend to Mr. Scott Joplin. In 1959 the infamous "Ragtime" Bob Darch, at Tichenor's suggestion, invited Marshall to play in public in Sedalia, Missouri; fortunately, the concert and much of Marshall's playing and remarks were tape-recorded by Mr. Tichenor. The interview is reproduced in our new issue in its entirety a valuable document of Marshall's personality and conversational tone. All comments are transcribed exactly as they were said, with no correction of grammar or removal from the vernacular; it is believed by this editorial staff that such details are as important to the portraiture of the people as are the words themselves. Many grateful thanks to Mr. Tichenor for making these invaluable items available in print. What follows here are only the very briefest of tidbits; the full text is reproduced in the pages of the magazine. |
