1 [Newspaper] coverage is, of course, always
supportive of sports itelf and of the home team in particular. There is no
pretense of objectivity. It is all part of the ideological ground for other
civic goals, including the successful competition of cities for growth-inducing
functions. Professional teams serve many latent social functions . . . ;
sustaining the growth ideology is clearly one of them (Logan and Molotch 1987,
p. 81 and the preceding discussion, pp. 79-81).
2 "Normal" camera lenses (approx. 48-55 mm) more closely reproduce
the relative distance and size relationships seen by the eye. Telephoto and
long focal length lenses shorten the apparent distance between objects, and
lessen the relative size of objects (e.g. a building in the foreground and
another in the background will appear to be closer in size and closer together
than with a normal focal length lens).
