Drako Zarhazar
Possibly Brighton’s greatest eccentric, Drako Zarhazar’s life-story reads like some improbable work of fiction, having danced at the Moulin Rouge and London Palladium, modelled for Salvador Dali’s ‘Crucifixion of Christ’, starred in films by Andy Warhol and Derek Jarman and also having survived two serious road accidents and comas.

Decorated with exotic tattoos and piercings, Drako is someone you simply couldn’t mistake, even in Brighton. His head sports a tattooed triangle, while his face is adorned with bright blue eyebrows, facial piercings and an impressive Daliesque wax moustache. Visit his flat and it is somewhat like stepping into the pages of a pornographic psychedelic cartoon, for all the walls are adorned with phallic images. From flaccid to fully erect, there are thousands of them everywhere, sometimes stuck casually onto a traditional painting, while others are accompanied by humorous comments.

Ask him about his films and Drako usually seems fairly nonchalant about them all, preferring instead to describe his favourite movie moment as ‘one night in Rome when someone filmed me putting a candle up someone’s arse, which I lit, and then with a big whip, whipped out the flame’.

Nowadays Drako rarely ventures out and unless you happen to spot him shopping around Kemptown, the only place you might see him perform is at Vavavavoom!, the Burlesque-style club night where he occasionally stands naked on a plinth for the evening, encouraging the gaze of passers-by.

Drako recalls meeting Dali for the first time
‘I remember being invited one day to a house on the outskirts of Paris. I walked down the stairs to a pool in the basement, and swimming naked in the pool were two beautiful girls. I remember coming and sitting on a big couch next to Salvador Dali. He didn’t say anything to me but kept watching these two naked girls swimming, and I suddenly noticed Dali’s hand moving up and down next to me. He was looking at these beautiful girls… and he was wanking.
And I thought to myself ‘here I am on the outskirts of Paris, sat next to the famous painter Salvador Dali, with him wanking over these beautiful girls. Isn’t life incredible?’
