March 7 & 8, 2003 ~ Glen Road Irish Trio
performed in Douglas County schools and at the Downtown Conference center

Mike Dugger plays tenor banjo and guitar, tells humorous tales, and sings in a voice described as "mellow, assured and engaging." He started his musical career when he and Roger Landes formed the group, "Scartaglen," that earned renown as one of America's finest bands playing Irish traditional music. He has recorded numerous CD's of traditional Celtic and original music.
Turlach Boylan plays flute, tin whistle and tenor banjo. He grew up on a farm in County Derry, Ireland, the oldest of seven children. He rose to competition-winning status as a musician in Ireland before moving to America. He is an engineer and computer programmer in addition to being the founder of Big Plain Records, a label which promotes Irish Traditional Music in the US and Canada. His performance on the flute has been called "world class."
Greg Brown plays fiddle, guitar, Anglo Concertina and Button Accordion. He left Newfoundland when he was fourteen and grew up in Alberta, Canada. After earning a degree in electrical engineering, he became a full-time musician and teacher. A founding member of "Shindigo" in Ottawa where he now lives, Greg is featured on Nicholas Williams' 2001 release The Crooked River and has performed with Irish whistle player Frank Cassidy, the great English-born Canadian singer and concertina player Ian Robb, and the Ottawa-based Cajun group, "Ball and Chain."
A DANCER TOO!
Many thanks to Glen Road for bringing a dancer along to complement their performance! Lisa Hunt has been studying Irish step dance for six years in Virginia Beach, VA, under the tutelage of Heather Mailey-Esposito. She also studies each summer in the Boston College Gaelic Roots program. Her love of traditional Irish music combined with the Riverdance phenomenon renewed her interest in dance after a long respite from her 15 years of ballet training. She has toured extensively, performing with the Chieftans and other groups, and joined the cast of Common Ground for its 2002 season.
Natalie Jones has charmed the audience two years in a row at the November Tellabration! storytelling festival.

The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County was pleased to sponsor the 7th Annual Georgia Cowboy Poets Gathering at the Mashburn Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of the Douglas County High School on March 1st at 7 p.m. Showcasing award-winning cowboy poets from around the U.S., this special event is presented by COPAS Productions with special support from the Booth Western Art Museum, a new cultural facility in Georgia. Cowboy Gathering performers also performed in six Douglas County elementary schools on Friday, February 28th, and they celebrated cowboy life with more songs, stories and poetry at Borders Books at the Arbor Place Mall on Friday from 6 until 9 p.m.
The 7th Annual Georgia Cowboy Gathering highlighted the talents of the Academy of Western Artists Cowgirl Poet of the Year, Debra Coppinger Hill from Oklahoma, who shared the original cowboy poetry and stories that garnered her the Will Rogers Award for Excellence in Western Poetry; Western yodeling champion Rick Felix, an Arizona-based Celtic cowboy whose music has won many Western Music Association awards; and cowboy poet and renowned chuckwagon cook John Schaffner who performs regularly at WestFest and other events across the United States. Founders of the Georgia Cowboys Poets Association, Jerry Warren and Joel Hayes presented original poems and songs along with classic pieces by traditional and contemporary cowboy poets. The Tumbleweed Trio added their own special brand of upbeat cowboy and Western music to the show.
Nominated as the Southwest Nighthawks Entertainer of the Year, Gathering producer Doc Stovall has been honored by the Georgia Senate as the Official Balladeer of the State of Georgia. The Georgia Senate has also recognized Jerry Warrren as the Official Cowboy Poet of the State of Georgia. Arizona native Jim Dunham, known for his trick shooting and quick draw, served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Tickets for the Saturday evening main stage event were $12 at the door and $10 in advance.
In conjunction with the Cowboy Gathering, selected works - bronze sculpture, vintage movie posters and limited edition prints -- from the permanent collection of the Booth Western Art Museum were displayed at the Cultural Arts Center of Douglasville/Douglas County in a special three-day exhibition on Friday, February 28th, 6 until 9 pm; Saturday, March 1st, 1 until 5 p.m., and Sunday, March 2nd, 1 until 6 pm. The Booth Western Art Museum, the event's major sponsor, opens the doors of its 80,000 square foot facility featuring 300 works of primarily 20th century Western art in Cartersville during 2003. The CAC's exhibit previewed its holdings. (For more information, visit www.boothmuseum.org.)
February, 2002: The Georgia Cowboy Poets presented the sixth annual Georgia Cowboy Poetry Gathering to celebrate the cowboy lifestyle in music and epic poetry (made popular by Baxter Black on NPR) on Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, February 23rd. Saturday's line-up brings in the Sisters of the Silver Sage from Tennessee along with John Schaffner from Colorado and perennial favorites Jerry Warren, Ray Barker, and Doc Stovall. The tickets are $10 in advance (available M-F at the Cultural Arts Center, 8652 Campbellton Street) or $12 at the door; $15 in advance for a two-night ticket. Location: Mashburn Theatre on the campus of Douglas County High School, Campbellton Street in Douglasville.
