Purpose

The literature and traditions that surround atheism, humanism, freethought, etc. have led to a host of confusing and contradictory definitions of the words that are used in discussions on these subjects. Here is a list of the definitions I use in TRIP entries. These are in no way meant to be the canonical definitions, in the sense that I mean them to be adopted by any of the ungodded community. They are simply here to try to explain the terms I habitually use. If they are instructive, great. If you disagree with them, or my understanding of them is flawed, please correct me. This is a work in progress.

Definitions
atheist
A person who does not actively believe in any god. There are two forms of atheist: strong and weak. Not to be confused with agnostic. The term 'atheist' has historically been used in some circles as a perjorative, and as a codeword for Communist. I use the word atheist simply to denote someone without any belief, with no implied political affiliation or judgment.
atheism
The body of thought that denies the existance of gods.
god
A catch-all word that describes an unexpected feature of our universe. This is not to be confused with the use of the word "God" by the likes of Einstein, who used the term to refer to the fundamentals of the extant universe.
Humanism
The body of thought that denies the existance of gods.
Humanist
A person who believes that Humanism is the best approach to take to life.

strong atheism
The atheist belief that there are definitely no gods. This differs from weak atheism in that the strong atheist has decided that the lack of evidence of gods has conclusively settled the question of their non-existance. Strong atheists usually take the position that the existance of a god would be blatantly obvious from within the universe. As no such evidence exists, it would be intelectually dishonest to assume that gods do exist. I am a strong atheist. If proof of god showed up tomorrow, the believer would say, "Hey! This isn't my god!", the agnostic would say "See, I was right!", the weak atheist would say "Gee, I was wrong!", and the strong atheist would demand a recount in all precincts.
weak atheism
The atheist belief that there has been no demonstration of the existance of gods. This differs from strong atheism in that the weak atheist has not decided that the lack of divine evidence has not yet conclusively settled the question, although there is no reason to operate under the assumption that a god does exist. Weak atheism
secular humanism
The body of thought that denies the existance of gods.
deist
The body of thought that denies the existance of gods.
deism
The body of thought that denies the existance of gods.
ungodded
Like unleaded gas, only for your brain. My umbrella term for all who have an issue with the idea of gods. As it is new, no preconceived ideas or tones have attached themselves to the word, yet. Such a term is necessary since history, literature and criticism have made a hash of the popular definitions.
