Most of the views of Chautauqua Lake
show off its natural beauty or highlight the lake's recreational
attractions. The beginning of the CD includes a small photo
booklet of early Chautauqua Lake. Transportation on and around the lake has always been important, but probably reached its peak during the Victorian period beginning around 1890, when Almet N. Broadhead owned the Chautauqua Steamboat Company and the Jamestown Street Railway System. Mr. Broadhead is responsible for developing a rail transit system that ringed the lake and connected passengers to overland railroads throughout the country. He even developed or caused the development of attractions to create more traffic: Sylvan Park, Midway Park, and Celoron Park. Sylvan was a picnic area, but Midway and Celoron were amusement parks. Midway Park still exists, but its "big sister", Celoron Park has been gone for nearly half a century. A large portion of the Chautauqua Lake views is devoted to the Great White Fleet, Mr. Broadhead's steamboats. An excellent book for learning about Chautauqua Lake is Figure 8 the Lake, by Erlandson and Swanson. It's at The Fenton Gift Shop. |
