IX. Validation

The Jones counter was operated simultaneously with the electronic counters for  hundreds of miles and during the certification of several courses. In every case when readings were taken, results were identical for all counters.

Left and right views of the wheel used for the tests are shown in Section II. Tests were always done with the Sigma Sports BC 600 and the Bike Planet Protégé 8 as shown in the upper part of the photograph on the left. Because the sensors for these computers differ in response, it was possible to place that for the Protégé slightly ahead of that from the BC 600 as shown on the right and get precise simultaneously synchronization of both computers with the zero point on the rim. The Jones meter was mounted so that it was synchronized with the 0.5 rev marks on the rim. Occasionally, other computers were tested simultaneously as shown by the Sigma Sports BC 500 shown in the lower part of the photograph on the left. Note the mounting on the stem -- a novel option with the BC 500. The sensor for this last computer is a newer design, but I prefer the old one shown on the right. No other sensors were tested extensively

When counts were read only from the Jones counter with a crude estimate of fractions of a count, results were identical with those from the electronic counters within the limits of this crude estimate. When the fractions of a count for the Jones were derived from reference to the graduated rim, then all counters gave      precisely the same results.
