Westminster Confession Chapter III
Of God's Eternal Decree

I. God from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass; yet so, as thereby neither is God the author of sin, nor is violence offered to the will of the creatures; nor is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established.

II. Although God knows whatsoever may or can come to pass upon all supposed conditions;[4] yet has He not decreed anything because He foresaw it as future, or as that which would come to pass upon such conditions

III. By the decree of God, for the manifestation of His glory, some men and angelsare predestinated unto everlasting life; and others foreordained to everlasting death.

Quotes About Open Theism

“While claiming to offer meaningfulness to Christian living, open theism strips the believer of the one thing needed most for a meaningful and vibrant life of faith: absolute confidence in God’s character, wisdom, word, promise, and the sure fulfillment of his will.”
—Bruce Ware

“Open theism…dishonors God, distorts Scripture, damages faith, and would, if left unchecked, destroy churches and lives.”
—John Piper

“Presenting itself as a legitimate variant within evangelicalism, ‘open’ theism in reality so redefines the God of the Bible and of theology that we wind up with a quite different God.”
—D. A. Carson

“Evangelical theology faces a crisis of unprecedented magnitude. The denial and redefinition of God’s perfections will lead evangelical theology into disintegration and doctrinal catastrophe. The very identity and reality of the God of the Bible is at stake.”
—R. Albert Mohler, Jr.

“The truth of the matter is that the fraying at the edges of the evangelical world has now turned into an unraveling at its center. First came the new definitions about who evangelicals were. Then the boundaries were shifted. Then they were crossed. And now the reality of God is redefined and made altogether more accommodating to our postmodern culture.”
—David F. Wells

“To confess that God exists, and at the same time to deny that He has foreknowledge of future things, is the most manifest folly.”
—Augustine

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent; has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”
—Numbers 23:19

“And also the Glory of Israel will not lie or change His mind; for He is not a man that He should change His mind.”
—1 Samuel 15:29

“Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; calling a bird of prey from the east, the man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.”
—Isaiah 46:9-11

God is Immutable
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Hebrews 13:8

"God is unchanging in his being, perfections, purposes, and promises, yet God does act and feel emotions, and he acts and feels differently in response to different situations. This attribute of God is also called God's immutability"
-Wayne Grudem

"The fact that God is immutable does not mean that he is inactive: immutability should not be confused with immobility."
-Herman Bavinck

"Even reason teaches us that no change is possible in God, since a change is either for better or for worse. But in God, as the absolute Perfection, improvement and deterioration are both equally impossible."
-Louis Berkhof

"Consider what you owe to His immutability. Though you have changed a thousand times, He has not changed once."
-Charles Spurgeon

"But without the belief of the doctrine of election, and the immutability of the free love of God, I cannot see how it is possible that any should have a comfortable assurance of eternal salvation."
-George Whitefield

  • A Brief Analysis of the Holiness of God By John D. Wilsey
  • The holiness of God is one of the most neglected subjects in Christian circles today. It seems that there is a certain reluctance on the part of many preachers, writers, and teachers to explore the intricacies of the holiness of God. This is a great tragedy. Without a deep appreciation for God’s holiness, several problems exist.
