The Nannie Seddon Barney #23, Children of the Confederacy was originally organized in October, 1916 under the Fredericksburg
Chapter, United Daughters of the Confederacy. The Chapter is named after Mrs. Joseph Nicholson Barney, the founder of the
Fredericksburg Chapter UDC. She was born in Fredericksburg, VA on June 10, 1838. Nannie Seddon Barney led a fund-raising
drive in 1866 to replace the wooden posts on the graves of the Confederate dead with marble headstones and to erect a statue
of a Confederate soldier. Today her hard work and dedication can be seen in the Fredericksburg Confederate Cemetery.
The Nannie Seddon Barney, Children of the Confederacy organized with 27 Charter members. It quickly grew and in 1928 had
sixty-two members. Due to hard times and the depression it was difficult to keep the chapter growing and it disbanded.
We are proud to announce that in June of 2005 a decision was made to reactivate the Chapter and seven charter members quickly
turned in applications. They organized and elected officers. The Chapter held monthly meetings while awaiting their Charter.
On February 18, 2006 a Chartering Ceremony was held and the Chapter was official.
The Children of the Confederacy is an organization of young people from birth to age eighteen, who are descendants
of the men and women who served honorably in the Confederate Army, Navy or Civil Service. They are bound together by love
of the Southland, heritage and country. The Children of the Confederacy is not political, nor is it sectional. The organization
strives to teach the truths of history, not only to its members, but also to fellow Southerners and to the world.
