BG1TuTu Install Process on Mac OS X

Version 1.3.1

Created by I. Rahn Maedin (aka: Brian Thoma)

Last Updated: September 24, 2006

Introduction

This FAQ was created with the goal of providing a detailed, easy to follow, step-by-step process for running BaldurÕs Gate I (with or without the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion) natively on Mac OS X by using the BG1Tutu conversion utility (originally conceived by Japheth, found at PocketPlane). Please be aware that the information presented is not guaranteed to work; it seems to serve well in most cases, but not all – YMMV.

Each section of this FAQ is intended to be self-contained so anyone following it doesnÕt have to be flipping pages.

È NOTE: as long as I have web-space, the most up-to-date version (in HTML) can be found HERE. The HTML version may be newer than the PDF version, but I will release of an updated PDF version if there are any major changes.

¥ This FAQ is divided into seven parts:

1. Introduction

ˆ Including helpful hints about making it easier to revert to a previous Tutu-ed state (p 2).

2. Common Questions about BG1Tutu

ˆ If you donÕt know why you might want to run BG1Tutu (or what it can do for you) look here first.

3. Conversion Method I:          BG1 for BG2-SoA

4. Conversion Method II:         BG1-TotSC for BG2-SoA

5. Conversion Method III:        BG1 for BG2-ToB

6. Conversion Method IV:      BG1-TotSC for BG2-ToB

7. Version Information:             Look here for a list of changes, kudos, thanks, etc.

È At the beginning of each of the Sections (I – IV) is a list of what you will need to do the conversion.

È IÕve tried to include links for all relevant downloads and information, but I apologize if a link has become broken since this FAQ was posted (corrections are always welcome).

Before You Get Started

#1 – This FAQ makes the presumption that the person reading this is familiar enough with the Mac OS that the terms in this document (such as ÒClassicÓ, hard disk partitions, etc.) do not need to be defined.

In some places there are some post-BG1Tutu installations that are done using the Command Line Interface (CLI) – these are optional (but recommended, since they will probably improve the overall conversion). Though very basic (from a CLI standpoint), if you do not feel comfortable using a prompt interface (or donÕt know what that is), you might want to skip those optional installs – or find someone to help you (Balduran's Forums would be a great place to look/ask for help).

#2 – IF YOU ARE RUNNING MAC OS 10.4.x (ÒTigerÓ): I personally do not own a Mac running OS 10.4.x, so any included information about performing a conversion under 10.4.x is taken from postings made in the NEW BG1Tutu Support thread (more feedback is being posted all the time). If you have specific questions related to this, please post them in the NEW BG1Tutu Support thread.

Background

The information herein was compiled from the Forums at Balduran's Adventurers' Spa & Grill (primarily from the OLD and the NEW BG1Tutu Support threads).

¥ The following abbreviations are used:

BG1: ÒBaldurÕs Gate IÓ

BG1-TotSC: ÒTales of the Sword CoastÓ (official expansion for BaldurÕs Gate I).

BG2-SoA: ÒBaldurÕs Gate II – Shadows of AmnÓ

BG2-ToB: ÒThrone of BhaalÓ (official expansion for BaldurÕs Gate II).

Introduction (continued)

¥ Backup up method to revert to a previous Tutu-ed install.

ÒWhy is this useful to the Tutu-ing process?Ó i.e.: why you should care.

ˆ This is useful if you are planning on installing additional modifications to your Tutu-ed game directory (such as Weidu mods). If, for some reason, the additional modification resulted in the game not behaving the way you expect (game quits unexpectedly, save-game failures, etc.) then this backup process would alleviate the need to start the Tutu-ing process all over again.

NOTE: this presumes that you have already had a successful initial Tutu conversion (that is, youÕve already successfully completed through Step 7 in Sections I, III & IV and Step 6 in Section II).

ˆ If you have not achieved a successful initial Tutu conversion, this backup procedure will not help you.

BG1Tutu Backup Procedure

  1. BEFORE YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES TO YOUR TUTU-ED DIRECTORY, COPY THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO A NEW LOCATION (alternatively you could select them all and archive them using the ÒarchiveÓ command in the Finder) – all these will equal at least 500 MB. These are all located in your Tutu-ed directory:
    1. Òbaldur.iniÓ
    2. ÒBaldurÕs Gate IIÓ (SoA or ToB)
    3. ÒBaldurÕs Gate II Mac OS XÓ (SoA)
    4. ÒBGConfigÓ (SoA or ToB)
    5. ÒBGConfig Mac OS XÓ (SoA)
    6. Òchitin.keyÓ
    7. ÒDialog.tlkÓ
    8. ÒdataÓ directory (the folder that contains all the .bif files)
    9. ÒoverrideÓ directory

  1. Install your mod into your Tutu-ed directory (procedure may vary, depending on the mod).
  2. Once installation is complete, fire up your game to make sure everything behaves the way you expect it to behave.
    1. If all works as expected, GREAT! (maybe you want to keep your backup just in case though)
    2. If the game does not seem to be working properly, delete the above eight items in your Tutu-ed directory and replace them with the copies you made in Step 1. Try installing your mod again.
  3. If you wish to made additional modifications, follow the above process again, this time making copies of the same eight items from the Tutu directory you modified in Step 2.

ˆ Alternatively you could make separate backup copies between each mod installation, if you have the disk space, that way you could revert to any previous state of the Tutu directory. Just FYI, under most circumstances, only the items in 1a & 1f-h are likely to be altered by a modÉ but there are always exceptions.

Common Questions about BG1Tutu

NOTE: please feel free to submit more questions to me (via the contact methods I gave earlier) if you feel they would be of general interest to anyone reading this installation FAQ.

1.     ÒWhat is BG1Tutu?Ó

2.     ÒWhy would I want to play the original BaldurÕs Gate using the BGII game engine?Ó

3.     ÒWhatÕs the deal with 2 different kinds of BaldurÕs Gate CD sets?Ó

4.     ÒAre there any major bugs?Ó

a.     ÒOkay smartie-pants – in that case, is there a way to fix these ÔGame-saveÕ failures?Ó

b.     ÒKensington software VS the Assistant.Ó

5.     ÒWhat happens if I have followed your FAQ and I still canÕt get a Tutu-ed conversion to work?Ó

6.     ÒCan character classes and kits be from BGII be used?Ó

7.     ÒHave the NPC classes been changed?Ó

8.     ÒCan BGII-only weapons (such as the katana) be found?Ó

9.     ÒHas the enemy AI been changed?Ó

10.   ÒCan you import your character from a BG1Tutu-ed game into BGII?Ó

11.   ÒDo you have any good BG/Tutu links to recommend?Ó

Q:          ÒWhat is BG1Tutu?Ó

A:           BG1Tutu is a way to convert the original BaldurÕs Gate I files so that the original game can be played (and enjoyed) using the BaldurÕs Gate II game engine. It also allows you to create the more detailed and customizable characters offered in BGII (with additional classes and kits) that you didnÕt have access to in BGI.

Q:          ÒWhy would I want to play the original BaldurÕs Gate using the BGII game engine?Ó

A:           First, you can now play the game at greater resolution than was possible with the original BGI engine. Second, you also get access to the improved graphics offered by the BGII engine. Third, and perhaps most important for Mac-heads, it allows you to play the original BGI game natively in OS X (no more running in classic or booting into OS 9 to play BGI).

Also, when Apple introduced the new ÒMac-IntelsÓ (Macs powered by Intel processors) in January 2006, it was announced that these machines would no longer run OS 9.x either natively or via a ÒClassicÓ layer within OS X. Therefore, BGITutu may be the only hope of playing this insanely GREAT game on these new machines. I say Òmay beÓ because IÕm still awaiting feedback from anyone who has/hasnÕt successfully done this on a Mac-IntelÉ.

Q:          ÒWhatÕs the deal with 2 different kinds of BaldurÕs Gate CD sets? Can I use either set to Tutu?Ó

A:           Possibly. This FAQ details the Tutu conversion process using the 5-CD set since that is the set I have.

Back in July 2000, Graphsim released the 5-CD set of the original BaldurÕs Gate game; then a short time later they released a single CD containing the expansion pack, ÒTales of the Sword CoastÓ. Although (as of FAQ version 1.3) you can still buy the expansion separately, at some point, Graphsim stopped selling the 5-CD set of the original game, now itÕs only bundled as a 6-CD set containing the ÒTalesÓ expansion.

Apparently, due to a change in the game installer on the 6-CD set, there have been many difficulties reported in performing BG1Tutu conversions. There are some reports of people getting the 6-CD set to work, but only one report detailed enough to try to follow to-date – it can be found on the AS&G forums, beginning here. IÕve also created a separate PDF of the relevant posts that can be downloaded here.

If you donÕt have the original 5-CD set, you can still get it – eBay is a wonderful thing; as I said above, ÒTalesÓ alone can still be ordered directly from Graphsim.

Q:          ÒAre there any major bugs?Ó

A:           No – Tutu-ed games, in general, tend to be very stable, although exceptions can always be found. One notable exception is that Tutu-ing a Throne of Bhaal installation can have issues – the most common seems to be save game failures (keep reading for a solution).

È ÒOkay smartie-pants – in that case, is there a way to fix these ÔGame-saveÕ failures?Ó

ÈÈÈ YouÕre in luck, Gorilym hit upon a solution to this problem. Apparently the application makes a boo-boo and inside the BGII directory creates a ÒTempÓ file instead of a ÒTempÓ folder – so the fix is to delete the file called ÒTempÓ and replace it with a folder of the same name.

È ÒKensington software VS the Assistant.Ó

ÈÈÈ Lord_Jeremy and a few others have posted experiences that having Kensington software installed under 10.4.x can cause problems when the Assistant tries to do the conversion (FYI: the Assistant is used for any Tutu conversion).

Q:          ÒWhat happens if I have followed your FAQ and I still canÕt get a Tutu-ed conversion to work?Ó

A:           HmmmÉ if thatÕs the case then IÕd have to say youÕre S.B.T. (Screwed, Blued & Tatooed)É j/k J. Seriously, with all of the possible combinations of hardware, OS versions, etc. I donÕt think itÕs possible to write instructions that work for everyone. That being said, a very adventurous soul named Phyte wrote up a detailed account about how he was able to use the FAQ as a starting point but had to jump through a few extra hoops. The post is HERE, but also read the follow-up posts here and here to get the full picture. In case the previous links go down, IÕve created a PDF of the posts, get it HERE.

Q:          ÒCan character classes and kits be from BGII be used?Ó

A:           Yes.

Q:          ÒHave the NPC classes been changed?Ó

A:           Yes or no – it depends on whether you opt to install other mods (usually Weidu mods) to modify NPC game files. However, BG1Tutu itself has the option to install kits for NPCs when itÕs run – though this doesnÕt change NPC classes, it can alter how those NPCs can be utilized.

Q:          ÒCan BGII-only weapons (such as the katana) be found?Ó

A:           Yes – but youÕll need to install other optional mods (such as the BG1Tutu Tweak Pack).

Q:          ÒHas the enemy AI been changed?Ó

A:           Depends – on whether or not you do optional installs. Some mods have components that effect enemy and/or ally AI behavior.

Q:          ÒCan you import your character from a BG1Tutu-ed game into BGII?Ó

A:           ABSOLUTELY! ThatÕs one of the great things about playing a Tutu-ed game: you can created a character and take them from zero XP at the beginning of BGI all the way through the very last encounter of the Throne of Bhaal expansion. This is especially cool for those who want to play a ÒBGII-onlyÓ character (say a monk or wild mage) from the very beginning of the BaldurÕs Gate Saga.

Q:          ÒDo you have any good BG/Tutu links to recommend?Ó

A:           Sure! Most are littered throughout this FAQ but here they are (plus a few others):

NOTE: To reduce opportunities for problems, everything should be installed on the same disk partition. It does not need to be the internal HD, but all pieces should be on the same logical disk.

1.     Make a FULL install of BaldurÕs Gate I.

a.     BG1.

i.       This must be installed either via ÒClassicÓ or a computer that can also boot into Mac OS 9.x.

ii.      When you launch the installer, there are 3 installation options. Choose any except ÒMinimal InstallÓ.

È Note: even if you choose ÒFull InstallÓ this isnÕt Òfull enoughÓ for using BG1Tutu, so keep reading. J

b.     Complete the FULL install.

i.       Launch the BG1Tutu Assistant v1.1.1.

ii.      Choose ÒMake a Full InstallÓ (File menu).

iii.     When the dialog window comes up, navigate to the updated ÒBaldurÕs GateÓ application in the BG1 install that was done above.

iv.    Follow the prompts in the Assistant, theyÕll ask you to insert each of the BG1 discs.

v.     When the assistant is done you now have your FULL install of BG1.

2.     Make a FULL install of BaldurÕs Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

ˆ Doing a FULL install can be done one of two ways, either via Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.x.

a.     FULL install via Mac OS X.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒRecommended InstallÓ option.

iv.    After installation, quit the installer and open the ReadMe found on Disc 1.

v.     Follow the instructions in the ReadMe to do a ÒMaximum InstallÓ (after this you will have a FULL install of BG2-SoA).

b.     FULL install via Mac OS 9.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒMaximum InstallÓ option.

iv.    This will give you a FULL install of BG2-SoA.

NOTE: If you have the hard disk space, you can make compressed disk images of the directories containing your two FULL installs (using the Disk Utility application). If you have a DVD-R burner you can put them on a DVD for future use. This will prevent you from having to go through the entire FULL install process again.

3.     Install Baldurdash Fixes.

a.     BG1.

i.       Use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the ÒBaldur's Gate English-Language Game Text Update v1.0Ó and the ÒFixPack v1.1Ó.

ii.      Replace the "dialog.tlk" file in the "Game Data" directory (located in this path: BaldurÕs Gate/Game Data) with the updated Òdialog.tlkÓ in the Text Update v1.0 from Baldurdash. DonÕt worry if it says the one being replaced is newer.

iii.     Copy the contents from the unstuffed FixPack v1.1 into the BG1 "Override" directory (located in this path: BaldurÕs Gate/Game Data/Override). Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

b.     BG2-SoA.

i.       Use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.3Ó that you downloaded.

ii.      Replace the "dialog.tlk" file in the "BG2 - SoA" directory with the updated one in the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.3Ó.

iii.     Apply the Baldurdash "FixPack v3.61". Use one of the links at the top of this section apply the appropriate method below:

1)     The Mac version of the Baldurdash BG2 update is a self-installing fix. NOTE: some posts have been made stating this doesnÕt work under 10.4.x (I canÕt verify this).

2)     The original Baldurdash version: use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the contents from the FixPack, next copy the resulting items into the BG2 "override" directory (located in this path: BG2 - SoA/Override). Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

4.     Update the BG1 application.

a.     There are a number of different versions of the Mac BaldurÕs Gate I app floating around on the Web. On general principle, one would probably want to use the newest version. However there is a caveat to that logic. Searching for ÒbaldurÓ at VersionTracker turns up this:

i.       The newest version (v1.0.2; 06/21/2001) is an Open Beta that supports online mutliplay. The link I found is HERE.

ii.      A supposedly older final version (v1.0.2d3; 11/24/2000) is HERE. This is the preferred update to use.

b.     Delete the original app from the directory created from Step 1a and replaced it with the updated app (whichever update you decide to use).

5.     Update the BG2 application.

a.     Replace the OS X versions of BG2 with the newest update.

b.     There is no reason why you should need to update the OS 9 version of the BG2 application, but you can if you want to Òjust to make sureÓ.

6.     Convert BG1 using BG1Tutu.

a.     Currently the "bgtutu" component included with the Assistant will not recognize BG2 OS X v1.1.2 as being a valid application for the conversion. As a work-around, replace the old BGTutu file (located in this path: BG1Tutu Assistantv1.1.1/BGTutu Folder/) with the BG1Tutu that you downloaded.

b.     Launch the BG1Tutu Assistant v1.1.1.

c.     FYI, read the text in the window when the application launches.

d.     Click the ÒNextÓ button.

e.     Browse to the directory of the FULL installs of BG1 and BG2-SoA for Step 1 and Step 2, respectively, and select the BG1 or BG2-SoA application.

È NOTE: the directory of the selected BG2-SoA application will be the ultimate target directory where everything will end up after the conversion process.

f.      Browse to the BG1Tutu folder (located inside the same folder as the Assistant).

g.     After you are told that everything is successfully configured click the ÒNextÓ button.

h.     Follow the prompts in the Assistant, sit back and wait.

È NOTE: there is still debate about whether to install the NPC Kits option (these allow you to tweak/customize the various NPCs in the game). I have not experienced any problems with this, but if you choose not to install them at this time there is a post-conversion way to add the NPC Kits that IÕll cover later.

i.       YouÕll see a lot of text scrolling by in the window. Some of it may say things like: ÒcanÕt locateÓ, ÒcanÕt convertÓ, etc. DonÕt worry about it. This is all a normal part of the conversion process.

j.       According to my experience, and based on what's been posted on the web, a successful conversion is one that ends with 53% or 54% being converted, but there may be some slight variation that occurs.

k.     When conversion has completed, click ÒNextÓ.

l.       Read the information in the window and select to ÒCopyÓ files (postings in the forums suggest that using the ÒMoveÓ option doesnÕt always work).

m.    Once everything is duplicated, quit the Assistant.

7.     At this point you should fire up the Tutu-converted BG1. This is done by launching the BG II Mac OS X application that was inside of the target BG2-SoA folder.

a.     Try to start a new game with a pre-generated character.

b.     Play for a few minutes then make sure you can save your progress. If the save fails, look in the BGII directory – if there is a file named ÒTempÓ, delete it and replace it with a FOLDER of the exact same name (thanks to Gorilym for this solution). If you still experience a save game failure after trying this youÕll need to start over with a new conversion.

c.     If everything appears to work then continue on. NOTE: all characters will start out at Level 7, this is normal and will be resolved once the Tutu Fix Pack is installed (below).

ˆ If you havenÕt done so yet, READ THE BACKUP INSTRUCTIONS ON p. 2.

8.     Install the WeiDU-Mac that you downloaded, according to its instructions.

9.     Install the ÒTutu FixpackÓ.

a.     Double-click on the Ò.dmgÓ file that you downloaded from Pocket Plane; this mounts virtual disk image on your desktop.

b.     Inside of the virtual disk, double-click on the ÒTutufix InstallerÓ to begin the process.

c.     Follow and reply to any of the on-screen dialogs youÕre given.

ˆ NOTE: HUGE THANKS to Loriel for making this one-stop-shopping OS X installer – you ROCK man! J

10.   Fire up BG1 again - again by launching the BG II Mac OS X application in the target BG2-SoA folder.

a.     Start a new game with a newly created (or pre-generated) character.

b.     Play for a few minutes then make sure you can save your progress.

c.     If everything appears to work then continue on.

11.   OPTIONAL Install components.

a.     The ÒTutu Tweak PackÓ. It modifies a number of aspects of the BG1 experience; check out the readme on the G3 website.

b.     The ÒBG1 NPC ProjectÓ. This greatly expands the scope of the NPCs in original BaldurÕs Gate so they come much closer to having the depth of those in BGII (including romances); check out the readme on the G3 website.

ˆ Installation of these components is beyond the scope of this FAQ, please refer to the respective web pages for these mods to get all the details you need.

YOU ARE DONE! NOW GO OUT THERE AND ENJOY BaldurÕs Gate all over again!

iii.     Copy the contents from the unstuffed FixPack v1.1 into the TotSC "Override" directory (located in this path: Tales of the Sword Coast/Game Data/Override). Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

b.     BG2-SoA.

i.       Use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.3Ó that you downloaded.

ii.      Replace the "dialog.tlk" file in the "BGII - SoA" directory with the updated one in the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.3Ó.

4.     Update the BG2 application.

a.     Replace the OS X versions of BG2 with the newest update .

b.     There is no reason why you should need to update the OS 9 version of the BG2 application, but you can if you want to Òjust to make sureÓ.

5.     Convert BG1-TotSC using BG1Tutu.

È NOTE: there is a warning in the Assistant that it will not work with TotSC, this can be ignored.

b.     Launch the BG1Tutu Assistant v1.1.1.

c.     FYI, read the text in the window when the application launches.

d.     Click the ÒNextÓ button.

e.     Browse to the directory of the FULL installs of BG1-TotSC and BG2-SoA for Step 1 and Step 2, respectively, and select the BG1 or BG2-SoA application.

If you still experience a save game failure after trying this youÕll need to start over with a new conversion.

c.     I If everything appears to work then continue on. NOTE: all characters will start out at Level 7, this is normal and will be resolved once the Tutu Fix Pack is installed (below).

ˆ If you havenÕt done so yet, READ THE BACKUP INSTRUCTIONS ON p. 2.

7.     Install the WeiDU-Mac that you downloaded, according to its instructions.

NOTE: To reduce opportunities for problems, everything should be installed on the same disk partition. It does not need to be the internal HD, but all pieces should be on the same logical disk.

NOTE #2: As of this writing there are some issues with this conversion that prevent it from working 100% correctly, specifically dealing with creating some new character classes. There is a work-around thatÕs not pretty, but it does the job. If youÕre really interested in the details about this read the BG1Tutu Support Forum starting HERE (that should bring you up to speed).

ˆ Doing a FULL install can be done one of two ways, either via Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.x.

a.     FULL install via Mac OS X.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒRecommended InstallÓ option.

iv.    After installation, quit the installer and open the ReadMe found on Disc 1.

v.     Follow the instructions in the ReadMe to do a ÒMaximum InstallÓ (after this you will have a FULL install of BG2-SoA).

b.     FULL install via Mac OS 9.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒMaximum InstallÓ option.

iv.    This will give you a FULL install of BG2-SoA.

c.     Install the ToB Expansion as detailed in the expansion install instructions.

È NOTE: the directory containing BG2-ToB is still called ÒBGII - SoAÓ, so every reference below is with the understanding that weÕre talking about full BG2-ToB install.

d.     Wild Mage: If you think you will want to play the Tutu-ed game using a Wild Mage character, make a duplicate of the complete BG2-ToB install and store it aside for later (creating the Wild Mage character will be discussed toward the end of this section).

Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

b.     BG2-ToB.

i.       Use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.1Ó and ÒFixPack 1.12Ó that you downloaded.

ii.      Replace the "dialog.tlk" file in the "BGII - SoA" directory with the updated one in the ÒEnglish-Language Game Text Update v1.3Ó.

iii.     Apply the "FixPack v1.12" by using Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the contents from the FixPack, next copy the resulting files into the BG2 "override" directory (located in this path: BGII - SoA/Override).

The link I found is HERE.

ii.      An older [supposedly] final version (v1.0.2d3; 11/24/2000) is HERE. This is the preferred update to use.

b.     Delete the original app from the directory created from Step 1a and replaced it with the updated app (whichever update you decide to use).

5.     Update the BG2 application.

a.     Delete the ÒBaldurÕs Gate IIÓ application (v1.0, this is the one placed there by the ToB Installer.

b.     Copy the BG2 OS X  into the BG2-SoA directory.

È DO NOT PUT THE UPDATED ToB APP (v2.1.2) in the directory (yet, that will come soon).

c.     Replace the ÒChitin.keyÓ file in the BG2-SoA directory with the updated version from the ToB v2.1.2 update you downloaded.

È NOTE: BG1Tutu v4 does not recognize the BaldurÕs Gate II (ToB) application as being valid under any circumstance, that is why you placed the BG2-SoA app v1.1.2 in the directory in Step 5b. This has been tested and verified extensively by Smiler and myself.

È NOTE: Smiler corrected me on the above NOTE (HERE and HERE). He was able to perform the BG1Tutu conversion by selecting the placing the ToB (v2.1.2) app in the BG2-SoA directory at this point, and then selecting it in the Assistant in Step 6e below. I have not been able to duplicate this, so YMMV.

This is all a normal part of the conversion process.

j.       According to my experience, and based on what's been posted on the web, a successful conversion is one that ends with 53% or 54% being converted, but there may be some slight variation that occurs.

k.     When conversion has completed, click ÒNextÓ.

l.       Read the information in the window and select to ÒCopyÓ files (postings in the forums suggest that using the ÒMoveÓ option doesnÕt always work).

m.    Once everything is duplicated, quit the Assistant.

n.     NOW you can place the updated ToB (v2.1.2) app in the BG2-SoA (donÕt delete the SOA v1.1.2 app).

È NOTE: unless you successfully selected the ToB (v2.1.2) app in Step 6e above.

7.     At this point you should fire up the Tutu-converted BG1. This is done by launching the ToB v2.1.2 application that is inside of the target BG2-SoA folder.

10.   Fire up BG1 again - again by launching the ToB v2.1.2 application in the target BG2-SoA folder.

a.     Start a new game with a newly created character (donÕt spend a lot of time on it).

È NOTE: As mentioned at the beginning of this section, this conversion is not completely without problems, and this is why: THE GAME WILL CRASH If you try to create ANY single-class character except monks, barbarians, sorcerers or mages (any class), multi-class characters also work just fine. So, for now create one of the Ònon-crashingÓ characters (IÕll talk about the character creation work-around later).

b.     When the game starts, make sure your character is at Level 1 (0 XP).

c.     Play for a few minutes then make sure you can save your progress.

12.   CHARACTER CREATION WORK-AROUND.

a.     Follow these steps if you want to create single-class characters (fighter, paladin, ranger, cleric, druid, thief or bard). If you want to create a Wild Mage character, go to Step 13.

b.     If youÕre running BG1 under ToB now, quit the program.

c.     Launch the game using the BG2-SoA (v1.1.2) application.

d.     The first thing youÕll notice is the normal startup screen is botched and it doesnÕt look like you can click on anything.

e.     Just start clicking around to the left of the center of the screen and eventually youÕll hit a Òhot spotÓ and be able to move forward.

È NOTE: As of this writing I have screenshots posted HERE of the graphical anomalies IÕm referring toÉ

f.      Click on the Multiplayer button in the main menu.

g.     Generate the character you want (the Wild Mage kit for mages is the only one that wonÕt be available). Again, if you want to play a Wild Mage character, go to Step 13.

h.     Export your new character.

i.       Quit the application.

j.       Re-launch the game using the ToB (v2.1.2) app.

k.     Start a new game and import your character from step 12h.

l.       Go out and claim your destiny! J

m.    IMPORTANT: game-save failures have been reported with ToB conversions. If you experience these problems, look in the BGII directory – if there is a file named ÒTempÓ, delete it and replace it with a FOLDER of the exact same name (thanks to Gorilym for this solution).

13.   HOW TO CREATE & PLAY A WILD MAGE CHARACTER.

a.     Create a 2nd standard BG2-ToB installnot the one you Tutu-ed. This can be done by following the instructions in Step 2a – 2d again, by copying the full install from your backup source (if you did that), or you would have already done this after reading Step 2e.

b.     The first thing that needs to be done is to be able to create a Level 1 Wild Mage in the BG2-ToB (non-Tutu-ed) game.

i.       Download a hex editing program (Gorilym & I both have used HexEdit to great success, you can do a search for it on Versiontracker, MacUpdate, etc.).

ii.      Make a copy of the ÒBaldur's Gate IIÓ application in the BG2-ToB (non-Tutu-ed) folder.

iii.     Launch your hex editor application and open the duplicate ÒBaldur's Gate IIÓ application with it.

iv.    Search for ALL INSTANCES of the hex offset value Ò0x015BA8Ó and replace it with Ò0x000001Ó. There should be 4 separate places to change.

v.     If you need some help getting started, I wrote up a quick-and-dirty How-To for this very purpose a year or two ago, you can download it HERE. It has some screen shots from HexEdit that may be helpful.

c.     Remove (or rename) the original ÒBaldurÕs Gate IIÓ application, then put the one you just edited in the Game Directory (rename the edited copy to ÒBaldurÕs Gate IIÓ, if needed).

d.     Start the BG2-ToB game (not the Tutu-ed game).

È NOTE: if the game fails to start, then replace the edited ÒBaldurÕs Gate IIÓ app with the original, non-edited one and make certain the game will launch. If it launches with the original app, go back to Step 13.b.ii and start again.

e.     Create a new Wild Mage character to your liking.

f.      Start a new game and check the characterÕs stats to make sure he/she is beginning at Level 1. If they are at Level 1, EXPORT the character (see the game manual if you donÕt know how to export).

È NOTE: if the character isnÕt at Level 1, quit the program and start with Step 13.b.ii again.

g.     After youÕve exported your Level 1 Wild Mage, quit the program.

h.     Find your exported character located in ÒcharactersÓ directory of the BG2-ToB game directory.

i.       Move (or make a copy and move) the character file to the ÒcharactersÓ directory in the TUTU-ED BG2-ToB game directory.

j.       Launch the Tutu-ed BG2-ToB game application.

k.     Start a new game and import your Level 1 Wild Mage.

È NOTE: Gorilym has reported that the imported Wild Mage character will start with too many Level 1 Mage Spells, either enjoy the advantage or choose to erase them from your characterÕs spell book.

YOU ARE DONE!

1.     Make a FULL install of BaldurÕs Gate I: Tales of the Sword Coast.

a.     Mount the BG-TotSC expansion CD.

b.     Copy the ÒTales of the Sword CoastÓ directory onto your hard disk.

c.     Complete the FULL install.

i.       Launch the BG1Tutu Assistant v1.1.1.

ii.      Choose ÒMake a Full InstallÓ (File menu).

iii.     When the dialog window comes up, navigate to the ÒTalesÓ application in the BG1-TotSC directory you copied in step 1b.

iv.    Follow the prompts in the Assistant, theyÕll ask you to insert each of the BG1 discs and the BG1-TotSC disc.

v.     When the assistant is done you now have your FULL install of BG1.

2.     Make a FULL install of BaldurÕs Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

ˆ Doing a FULL install can be done one of two ways, either via Mac OS X or Mac OS 9.x.

a.     FULL install via Mac OS X.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒRecommended InstallÓ option.

iv.    After installation, quit the installer and open the ReadMe found on Disc 1.

v.     Follow the instructions in the ReadMe to do a ÒMaximum InstallÓ (after this you will have a FULL install of BG2-SoA).

b.     FULL install via Mac OS 9.

i.       Insert Disc 1 of BG2-SoA.

ii.      Launch the installer.

iii.     Choose the ÒMaximum InstallÓ option.

iv.    This will give you a FULL install of BG2-SoA.

NOTE: If you have the hard disk space, you can make compressed disk images of the directories containing your two FULL installs (using the Disk Utility application). If you have a DVD-R burner you can put them on a DVD for future use. This will prevent you from having to go through the entire FULL install process again.

3.     Install Baldurdash Fixes.

a.     BG1-TotSC.

i.       Use Stuffit Expanderª to unstuff the ÒBaldur's Gate/Tales Of The Sword Coast English-Language Game Text Update v1.1Ó and the ÒFixPack v1.1Ó.

ii.      Replace the "dialog.tlk" file in the "Game Data" directory (located in this path: Tales of the Sword Coast/Game Data) with the updated Òdialog.tlkÓ in the Text Update v1.1 from Baldurdash. DonÕt worry if it says the one being replaced is newer.

iii.     Copy the contents from the unstuffed FixPack v1.1 into the TotSC "Override" directory (located in this path: Tales of the Sword Coast/Game Data/Override). Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

b.     BG2-ToB.

Replace all identical items in the Override directory (even if it says a newer version is already present).

He was able to perform the BG1Tutu conversion by selecting the placing the ToB (v2.1.2) app in the BG2-SoA directory at this point, and then selecting it in the Assistant in Step 6e below.

b.     Launch the BG1Tutu Assistant v1.1.1.

È NOTE: there is a warning in the Assistant that it will not work with TotSC, this can be ignored.

This is all a normal part of the conversion process.

j.       According to my experience, and based on what's been posted on the web, a successful conversion is one that ends with 53% or 54% being converted, but there may be some slight variation that occurs.

k.     When conversion has completed, click ÒNextÓ.

l.       Read the information in the window and select to ÒCopyÓ files (postings in the forums suggest that using the ÒMoveÓ option doesnÕt always work).

m.    Once everything is duplicated, quit the Assistant.

n.     NOW you can place the updated ToB (v2.1.2) app in the BG2-SoA (donÕt delete the SOA v1.1.2 app).

È NOTE: unless you successfully selected the ToB (v2.1.2) app in Step 6e above.

6.     At this point you should fire up the Tutu-converted BG1. This is done by launching the ToB v2.1.2 application that is inside of the target BG2-SoA folder.

7.     Install the WeiDU-Mac that you downloaded, according to its instructions.

So, for now create one of the Ònon-crashingÓ characters (IÕll talk about the character creation work-around later).

b.     When the game starts, make sure your character is at Level 1 (0 XP).

c.     Play for a few minutes then make sure you can save your progress.

d.     If everything appears to work then continue on.

11.   CHARACTER CREATION WORK-AROUND.

a.     Follow these steps if you want to create single-class characters (fighter, paladin, ranger, cleric, druid, thief or bard). If you want to create a Wild Mage character, go to Step 12.

Again, if you want to play a Wild Mage character, go to Step 12.

NOW GO OUT THERE AND ENJOY BaldurÕs Gate I: Tales of the Sword Coast

FAQ Version Information

v1.3.1  (2006-09-24) Original MS Word source document updated & distributed

È Due to continuing changes in my personal life IÕve decided to release the source BG1Tutu document. It doesnÕt mean that I wonÕt update at some point in the future, but at least this way others wonÕt have to wait any longer. See the below entry for the changes from the previous versions of the FAQ.

È If, in the future, someone else updates and distributes this FAQ, please maintain the version information and give credit where itÕs due. THANKS!

v1.3     (2006-04-15) PDF & HTML updated

È This update has been a long time in comingÉ due to changes in my personal life I missed out on about nine months of postings in the NEW BG1Tutu Support thread. I hope this catches up on all the major developments & reports. Please let me know if something needs added.

È BIG-HUGE THANKS to brab, Gorilym and Phyte for taking the time to proof this version before it went live – your comments were/are greatly appreciated.

È Rearranged the FAQ (it made more sense for the ÒCommon QuestionsÓ section to be near the top of the FAQ after all). Also try to make better use of formatting to improve readability, primarily from GorilymÕs suggestions.

È Added a FYI to the Introduction regarding conversions under Mac OS X 10.4.x (ÒTigerÓ).

È References to specific versions of the BG1Tutu ÒTweakÓ and ÒFix PacksÓ have been removed since they change fairly frequently, but the links in the FAQ donÕt change (or havenÕt yet).

È Solution for the ÒSave GameÓ failure is now included (thanks, Gorilym).

È Included links to Òhow-toÓ AS&G forum posts regarding the use of the 6-CD BaldurÕs Gate set (thanks, Lord_Jeremy).

È Wild Mage character creation work-around is now included (thanks, Gorilym).

È The BG1 NPC Project (a G3 Tutu mod) added as an optional install component (GorilymÕs excellent suggestion).

È Links added for LorielÕs BG2 Downloads and Forums (sister site for AS&G); The BiggÕs WeiDU page (thanks, Gorilym) and Spellhold Studios (also Gorilym).

È Old FAQ methods have been removed in order to free up space, if anyone wants to look at the old methods then contact me.

È Always finding more typos to correct (and probably introducing new ones each time).
