FROM THE DESK OF THE SECRETARY/TREASURER:

September ' 08

Aloha Blue Night Hawaii Chapter members,

The year has gone by faster then anyone had expected.  First off I want to thank everyone who participated in the weekend rides and the outstanding turnout for the Labor Day Run on the Big Island.  Those who went to the Big Island for the 2008 Labor Day Run was in for some unreal sunshine and fantastic Pele Showing at the Volcano. I will be submitting some of the photos and a report on out trip.

And now, I will be asking everyone to start to send in their dues so that I can complete the process on getting our membership renewed.  I just got the renewal packet from Blue Knights International.  All membership dues must be in to the Headquarters’ of Blue Knights International no later then January 31, 2009.  A $5.00 late fee will be assessed per member if it is received after January 31, 2009. Membership dues are $30.00 per member, $25.00 goes to International and $5.00 goes to the Hawaii Chapter.  Please send in your $30.00 dues to me.

Honorary memberships are to be voted on yearly by the chapter and are not to exceed 10% of the previous year’s membership.  (Article II. Section 2.04 of the International By-laws).

Correction Officers:  Those that are Correction Officers, who want to apply and be a member of the Blue Knights Hawaii, must provide the State Statute giving them the Powers of Arrest.  Employees of the Federal Bureau of Prisons that are applying new must provide a “Position Description Cover Sheet” and must be classified as a GS-007.

The International Board has voted to waive the renewal dues any member that is in the military reserves and called to full-time duty before January 31, 2009.  This does not apply to full-time military members, new members or those members who do not renew by the deadline with Blue Knight Hawaii.  No refund will be issued for later notification.

We will be picking up 5 new members from the Big Island.  The following people will be joining our Hawaii Chapter.  They are Mike Leite, James Pacheco, Jerry Wykes, Chris Allison and Paul Adams.  I have Paul Adams application and I will complete the process and send it in, the other four new members will receive their application and I will get it to Sterling for his signature.

I will be getting in touch with the members that are still on Kauai.  We need to push to continue to obtain and retain members in Kauai. Once the Super Ferry start running to Kauai, we can one day (on a four day weekend); all go to Kauai to show our support to the Kauai Blue Knights.  We all know that times are getting hard with the cost of living increasing at a rapid pace.  We all have to hang in there and keep our membership solid with rides on the weekend and participate in activities that will credit our non-profit status.    It has been a great 2008 and we all cannot wait to see what 2009 has in store for the Blue Knights Hawaii 1.

Thanks again and aloha,

Glen Kamanao

Our friend Margie Kazama from DOT (Operation Pono) had been telling me about this program, which could be turned into possible lucrative employment, especially for retired guys. I asked her to e-mail me info on how someone would go about making it happen. This is how. This info is appropriate for BKs, Hui Makai, and ex-solos.

Blue Knight Hospitality from Hawaii I

Chris & Janet Mehling from Arizona VI celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in Maui, Hawaii, from September 16th_23rd•  The former President (and founding Father-Bob Post) of Hawaii 1 that now lives in AZ provided e-mail addresses for those Knights on the Island prior to our departure. In the 16 years that we've been in this great law-enforcement family, we've hosted many Members from around the world at our home, both in NY and now Arizona. However, we've never had the occasion to need the assistance of another Member, even though we've traveled around the USA

The day after our arrival, one Member from Hawaii 1, "Paka" Weinstein, arranged a dinner that night to include him and his wife, as well as Brad Hickle & wife, and Bobby Hill & family. After the enjoyable funfilled dinner, the hospitality never stopped. We were offered a place to stay and transportation, which we gratefully acknowledged and explained that we had already booked a time-share (& later purchased one), and had a prepaid rental car. However, after being offered the use of a Harley Ultra Classic Anniversary Edition, and a flight around the island in a private plane, we couldn't turn that down.

The BK Member, Lt. Bobby Hill, still on the job with Maui County PD, met us the next morning at the airport. Although Janet was too apprehensive to join us, we took off for a 45 -minute flight around the eastern side of the island. Since I'm a Private Pi- lot myself, the rain showers and bumps didn't bother me, and I took several pictures. Mter returning to the airport, we followed Bobby back to his house near the north half of the island and picked up the blue Ultra Classic, and brought it back to our resort in Kihei. The following day, as planned from the night before, Brad Hickle (also on the job with Maui PD) arrived at our resort at 7 AM on his motorcycle to give us a full day of touring the island. We rode to and saw places that a tourist never gets to see. He allowed us stops for pictures, gave us factual tourist info at the different points we stopped at, cut a stalk of sugar cane for us to taste, and had a nice lunch in a small town. By the time we returned to the resort around 4PM, we were exhausted from all the adventure & excitement.

Due to the conflict of their work schedules and our schedule of "booked tours", we never had a chance to spend any more time with any of these by these Blue Knight Members of Hawaii 1. We thank you, and "Aloha." generous, helpful, caring Knights

We did see Bobby Hill one more time for 10 minutes on the day that we returned the motorcycle to his house. All in all, although my wife and I would've had a great time in Hawaii for this "2nd Honeymoon" trip, it never in a million years would have the same memories without the hospitality and fun provided
