USCG Model subjects

Boats, Ships, and Aircraft

List created and maintained by Bill Michaels.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy class of '81

I've built and maintained this list as a sort of public service, especially for those that are affiliated with the US Coast Guard. As a modeler, I know that USCG kits are often hard to find. My goal in building this list was to make it easier for people who are not active model builders to find USCG subject models.

This list is still a work-in-progress. Models of Coast Guard subjects are somewhat rare, and I could find no consolidated listing. The list contains both plastic and wooden models. I've pulled the list of available kits primarily from multiple hobby dealers' catalogs. The listings of the out of production models are mostly from memory and word of mouth. If you have any corrections, additions, or ideas for ways to improve it, please let me know. (I've made several additions to my list based information people have sent me.)
E-mail me.

Please Note: I am not a model dealer. I am not selling the kits listed here. This list is for information only.

Latest Updates:

3/20/2005:  Updated aircraft and RC boat lists.  Also added information on sources for plans.

12/12/02:  Updated aircraft and ship kit lists.  Improved formatting of lists.  Added some links to Official USCG web page for aircraft histories.

7/01/02: Moved list to my new ISP Earthlink and made some minor edits/updates.

6/01/02: Updated list with the new Trumpeter Models 1:48 scale HH-65 Dolphin kit-- the biggest news in USCG model kits in a long time!

3/16/2002: Added image of Aviation workshop decals. Added links to Microglass, maker of a 1/32 scale 82' and 95' WPB fiberglass hulls. Also added the Commander Series Models resin ships.

11/26/2001: Added some more pictures, and information about Aviation Workshop's line of decals and conversion kits.

3/23/2001: Added some more pictures, primarily in the "Out of Production" section.

1/03/2001. A number of people have contacted me, asking for sources and/or ways to contact manufacturers. This version of the list now includes two new features: pictures of the models or kit boxes, and links to some of the manufacturers' web pages.

Here are links to some of my favorite Internet hobby vendors. All have good prices and good service. (My opinion.)

Model Expo, Inc. They specialize in wooden ship models, but also carry some plastic kits.

Squadron Mail Order. Specialize in plastic and resin models. Excellent service.

Great Models Webstore. They specialize in plastic models. The best web catalog for searching and browsing.

Loyalhanna Dockyard.   They carry a variety of model hulls and accessories.  Great resource for Radio Control modelers.

Here are a couple of great sites for model building in general:

Modeling Madness:  The first place I look for reviews of plastic aircraft model kits.  Primary focus is on aircraft models.

ModelWarships.com:  A great site for information about resin and plastic ship models.

SMML Online:  The web page of the Ship Modelers Mailing List.  Primary focus is on steel ships, esp. warships since 1900.

Seaways Ships in Scale:  The best site for information about wooden sailing ship modeling.

Good Sources for plans of USCG Boats and Cutters

Coast Guard Museum Northwest:  The museum has an extensive library of plans, for sale at very reasonable prices.

Coast Guard Models:  A great source for all sorts of USCG models and plans.

A search on E-bay in the Hobbies and Crafts section for "USCG" and/or "Coast Guard" will turn up a number of models, both new and old.
