Hot-wire
The wire was definitely warmer. Till now his job was OK. He even thought he was doing it well, confident like a person living alone in daily patterns. There was always the shadow of anxiety, that all was not what it seemed. Yes the wire was definitely warmer. No gauges, no way to tell, it was slow. Just mind and senses at the wire station. Nobody really ever explained the responsibility, the rules, the instructions. Since the wire was almost always cool it felt like he understood. Or could decipher what he didn't know. There was a problem once, but that was before now. A memory, part of the shadow now.
The wire was hotter now, not so hot that he couldn't touch it. It was brown like a lamp cord. There was no sense of time, how fast, how hot, or what might happen. He knew the wire was dangerous, this was explained to him early on. The danger was real enough. Not just for him but others in the shadow.
