The Montgomery biography, The Gift of Wings: The Life of Lucy Maud Montgomery, by Mary Rubio is due to be published by Random House/Doubleday Canada October
2008. Elizabeth Waterston's new book is available titled Magic Island (from Oxford University Press). "Designed to be read alongside the new biography of
Montgomery by Mary Rubio, this is the first book to reinterpret Montgomery's writing in light of important new information
about her life. Each novel is discussed in terms of Montgomery's private life, her background reading and interests, and of
course each is also considered as a creative work on its own."

There are many ways to help protect the natural resources in LM Montgomery's
home province and location of her stories: Prince Edward Island. One opportunity is with the Island Nature Trust and the Trees in Trust Program at www.treesintrust.com.

The Finland International Turku Book Fair is featuring Canada and Montgomery this autumn (from Mary McDonald-Rissanen). Suvi Ahola and Satu Koskimies, who were at the 2006 Montgomery conference, have
a new book out called Runotyttöjen vuosi (A girl poet's year, Emily of New Moon). It's a stunning large
hard covered diary with numerous illustrations and quotes from the Finnish Anne and Emily books. There
is a special session, Prince Edward Island in the World, a seminar on Canadian literature's strong women
featuring Canadian writer Nancy Huston. Montgomery scholar Mary McDonald-Rissanen will be interviewed on Anne and
Emily's Landscapes. The Canadian Embassy is organizing, coordinating and publicizing the whole event, especially the
poetry evening "Faceoff:" Estonia- Russia-Canada! [ Kindred Spirits Magazine (Winter 2005) published a fascinating interview with LMM from 1937 that appeared in the Finnish magazine, Sirkka.]

The books I read most as a child were by Lucy Maud Montgomery,
who’s best known for her Anne of Green Gables stories, but I also liked Emily of New Moon. Emily was
an only child, as I was. Emily lived on an island, as did I. Although Manhattan Island and Prince Edward Island are not very
much alike, they are still islands. Emily’s father was dying of bad lungs, and so was mine. Emily had some dreadful
relative, and so did I. She had a hard time in school, and she also understood that there’s more to life than just the
things that can be explained by encyclopedias and facts. Facts alone are not adequate. I love Emily.
Our friends, Jack and Linda Hutton, have been honored by their
community for their hard work in sharing the history of Bala, Ontario and the life of L.M. Montgomery. We applaud their
devotion and artistry!
