Fishing Boats at Menemsha

Chilmark, Massachusetts

Chilmark is one of six towns on Martha's Vineyard.  It is known for its rolling hills, meandering stone walls, forested landscape, and unmatched coastline.  Trees are craggier than they are on other parts of the Island.  They get their shape from the winds and brisk salt air.  Coveted for its seclusion, it now provides the quiet setting for many a summer home.

The center of Chilmark is Bettlebung Corner.  It boasts a new and well-equipped library, community center, town hall, lovely church, country store, post office, and and school house. With weathered cedar shingle architecture, the center has maintained it historical character and island charm.

All roads from the center lead to points of beauty.  Middle Road provides an incredibly lovely view of a placid farm with the Atlantic as a backdrop.  The Crossroad leads to the fishing village of Menemsha where fishing boats and lobstermen land catch, private vessels lie along the dock, and fresh seafood can be purchased on the spot.  South Road leads to panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Menemsha Pond, the Elizabethan Islands, and the brilliant colors of the Gay Head Cliffs.

Gentle and serene, Chilmark embodies refined living in an historic island community.

Island of Martha's Vineyard

Martha's Vineyard is the largest island in New England . It lies in the Atlantic Ocean, seven miles south off the Southeast coast of Massachusetts approximately 80 miles from Boston and 150 miles from New York City.

The Island was formed about 10,000 years ago by glacial action. The south side of the Island is straight sandy ocean beach backed by ponds and salt marches. The northern shores are rocky and irregular, the land being hilly and wooded with the highest point at 310' above sea level.

There are five harbors, two of them spacious. Numerous freshwater ponds and streams grace the interior of the Island . Altogether there are 125 miles of tidal shoreline.

The Island has a total land area of about 100 square miles and hosts the six towns of Edgartown, Tisbury, West Tisbury , Oak Bluffs, Aquinnah, and Chilmark. Winter population is 14,000 and summer population is 106,000.

There are four web sites that provide more extensive information and further links on the island of Martha's Vineyard:

Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket Beaches

Chilmark has two of the most beautiful sandy beaches on the Island . These excellent swimming beaches, Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket, are only accessible during the summer months to Chilmark residents and their guests. Lucy Vincent, because of its isolation, has a section allowable for nude bathing. Squibnocket, because of its unique configuration and exposure to the Atlantic Ocean, attracts surfboarders from all over the Island . There are numerous other swimming beaches open to the general public including Menemsha Beach in Chilmark, Gay Head Beach in Aquinnah, State Beach on the Nantucket Sound, and South Beach in Edgartown.

Island Fishing

Salt water fishing on the Island is superb. The most sought after species include striped bass and bluefish. There are many popular fishing spots across the Island including beaches and stone jetties. Charter boats are also available to take anglers to the better fishing spots in offshore Island waters. The Island is host to the nationally recognized Martha's Vineyard Fishing Derby held in the months of September and October.

 Island Boating, Canoeing, Kayaking

One of the joys of an Island visit is getting out on the water. Kayaking and canoeing are popular along the shorelines and within coastal bays, ponds and estuaries. Sailing charters within Vineyard waters are available on historic twin-masted sailing vessels or speedy catamarans. Sailing lessons on Menemsha Pond are available thru the Community Center. The five harbors on the Island are a major destination of many pleasure boats.

Island Hiking

Martha's Vineyard treasures its natural resources. Preservation and protection of scenic, historic, and environmentally sensitive land has been a priority for many years on Martha's Vineyard . These efforts, led by a number of conservation organizations, have set aside many key parcels of land that are accessible to the public. These conservation areas offer many miles of developed trails for those who want to find quite solitude, enjoy scenic vistas, and experience the Island 's natural beauty.

Island Biking

Bicycles are a relaxed and enjoyable way to view the Island . Down island there is a network of paved off-road bike paths that connect the major town centers and public beaches. The pedaling is relatively easy. Up island there are more challenging scenic roads with country vistas and breathtaking ocean views. The system of bicycle trails on Martha's Vineyard is shown on most of the Island maps.

Dining Out on the Island

The Island abounds with opportunities for eating out. There are numerous upscale restaurants that specialize in preparing island-caught seafood and island-grown produce. Although pricey, these restaurants offer another memorable dimension of enjoyment to the Island experience.

Summer Cultural Activities

The months of July and August offer a multitude of social and cultural events on the Island . The more popular include town street fairs, the Island Agricultural Fair, fireworks displays, July 4th parade, a Boston Pops orchestra concert, a Boston Ballet presentation, and a seafood festival. In addition, there are numerous lectures, presentations, and recitals by well-known celebrities who make the Island their summer home.
