Descendants of Eli Tompkins

Generation No. 1

    1.  Eli1 Tompkins was born 04 Jul 1803 in Virginia, and died 10 Oct 1872 in Laurel Co. Kentucky.  He married (1) Elizabeth Wilborn Abt. 1820.  She died Abt. 1873 in Laurel Co. Kentucky.  He married (2) Mary Jane Godsey 1851 in Laurel Co. Kentucky, daughter of Thomas Godsey and Phoebe Elam.  She was born 17 Feb 1828 in Kentucky, and died Abt. 1880 in Laurel Co. Kentucky.

George Chestnut 24 m farmer $400 ky
Mahala " 18 f tn
(It looks like the Chestnuts are enumerated in the same household as Eli. However, the household before Eli is 364, and the next is 367, so this may have been an error, perhaps the Chestnuts are in separate household. Yet Chestnut's property is given the value of $400, and no such note is made for Eli, so perhaps they were living on the Chestnut farm)

Note: My great-grandmother Eliza Emma Tompkins, daughter of Reece Tompkins and Martha Jones, granddaughter of Mary Jane and Eli, called her grandparents in a letter:
"Eli Bony Tompkins" and "Jane Godsey."
This suggests that Eli's middle name may have been Bonaparte. Another hint at that is the fact that Eli Bony (son of Reece and Martha) was also sometimes referred to as Bonaparte.

Marriage Notes for Eli Tompkins and Elizabeth Wilborn:
Transcription of divorce papers:
To the Honorable the Judge of the Laurel Circuit Court, in Chancery sitting, your petition in Eli Thompkins humbly complaining, would respectively show unto your honor that some 20 years since he married his wife, Elizabeth and **** as a family *** life tolerably well for some time but at last by degrees a fire began to rise in the breast of my wife till it has grown to such an extent, that it cannot be put out with management and good treatment or with water. She seemed to be everything but a wife and everything but a prudent woman. I have a large family of gals and boys and I am willing to take them and work for them and do all that is in my power if I could get them out of her company. She is no wife to me nor has she been for 4 or 5 years, she is loose in her habits and plays too much with other men. With her there is no confidence in her virtue or chastity. Adultery seems to be her pleasure, therefore your petition in **** in Justice and mercy on your honor to set aside the marriage contract to divorce me and dissolve the union between us and in mercy ever will pray a he is in duty bound and prays that said Elizabeth Thompkins may be made a *** to this bill.

In the name of God Amen

I, Mary Jane Tompkins, of Laurel County Kentucky being of sound mind and disposing memory, And knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death and being desirous that my worldly should be Settled Equitably with all Persons do make and publish this my last will and testament.

First I give and bequeath to my children Pheba Diannah Storm, John W. Tompkins, Emly M. Baker, Elias B. Tompkins, Amanda G. Tompkins, George W. Tompkins, Stephen E. Tompkins and Sarah R. Brown one dollar each. It is further my will and desire that after my Just debts are Paid that the remainder of my Personal Property, Except my Saddle, be applied to the benefit of my other five children, Daniel H. Tompkins, Reece E. Tompkins, Malysa C. Tompkins, David R. Tompkins, and Elyza C. Tompkins. It is my desire that my daughter Elyza C. Tompkins have my Saddle. It is further my will and desire that my Executor, herein after appointed, Sell the Farm and pay the purchase money to Jarvis Jackson, and the remainder if any be Equally divided between my five children last named.

But if my Brother, Ellis Godsey, will Take and Keep them all together, he may have all the Property bequeathed by me to the Said five children, Except my Saddle, to help Raise and Educate them, But in the event that he does not take them, I want my Executor, herein after appointed, to have them bound out to Some Honest Trade or Calling.

And lastly, it is my Will and desire and I hereby appoint Moses M. Burnett Executor of this my last Will and Testament. In testimony of which I have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this 16 day of Sept 1873–
Mary J. Tompkins ( X her mark)

Signed
James Storms
M. M. Burnett
Nancy McHarlin

(Amanda G. is Ammon
G. Tompkins, this just seems to be an error in the will. Jarvis Jackson Tompkins is not mentioned in the will. Jarvis was a 2 year old child when the will was written. Another child is mentioned, grouped in with the older group of kids (the first set) John W. Tompkins. John W. may refer to the William J. Tompkins who was with Mary Jane and Eli in the 1860 census, but who his parents are is not known.  Also note that Sarah Tompkins is mentioned as Sarah Brown, already in Sept 1873, which contradicts Sarah's marriage date of 24 Nov 1874]

Children of Eli Tompkins and Mary Godsey are:
9    i.    Pheby Dinah2 Godsey, born 28 Apr 1845 in Virginia; died 08 Jul 1910 in Laurel Co. Kentucky.  She married James Storm 16 May 1861 in Laurel Co. Kentucky; born Abt. 1842; died Abt. 1882.

Notes for Pheby Dinah Godsey:
Pheby Dinah Godsey is included as a daughter of Mary Jane Godsey and Eli Tompkins for reference, as she belongs with this family. She is clearly named as daughter in Mary Jane's will,  but it remains uncertain exactly who her parents are.

My conclusion is that she is the daughter of either Mary Jane Godsey before her marriage to Eli, or the daughter of one of Mary Jane's siblings. In either case she would seem to be a Godsey and not a Tompkins. This conclusion is based on the following:

Although Pheby is enumerated in 1860 in the household with Mary Jane and Eli as Pheby Tompkins b. 1845 VA, she went by Godsey on her marriage certificate. If she were a Tompkins, and married a Godsey before marrying James Storm on May 16, 1861, this would give her only 10 months from the census date of July 19, 1860 in which to get married, get divorced or become widowed, and remarry. While this is not an impossible scenario, it's not very likely.

Add to this the fact that Mary Jane Godsey's mother was named Phoebe, and Phoebe's mother was named Dinah, you have your namesakes, making it highly probable that Pheby Dinah was one of the grandchildren of Phoebe Elam and Thomas Godsey.

So I think the question here becomes, not whether she was a Tompkins or a Godsey, but was it Mary Jane Godsey or one of her siblings that was Pheby's mother?  Pheby was listed as Tompkins in the 1860 because she was taken in by that family and perhaps went by Tompkins at times -  this happened often enough.

If Pheby were the child of one Mary's siblings, all were living and later had children of their own, and so this would imply that the sibling had the child without being married, and that Pheby was then given to the Godsey family to raise. The idea is that Mary would then have taken Pheby with her after marrying Eli, her mother now being gone, and father Thomas moving in with brother Elly, no longer able to take care of children.

This seems a likely scenario as Mary would at that time have been the only Godsey sibling in without a house full of children already. Yet just as likely is the possibility that Mary Jane is herself the mother of Pheby.

Notes for Laura Belle Tompkins:
Although Laura Belle Tompkins was a family genealogist, and when in her 80's, reported to a great grandchild that the family was descended form Daniel Boone's sister,  she somehow managed to forget this fact. She made statements in later years about her grandparents, Mary Faw and David Graybeal, being born in Holland. She wrote this in a letter to one of her descendants, and stated this false information in a newspaper interview. Why she made these statements remains a mystery. Since these are the same grandparents, who, on the Faw side, are descended from the Boone's of Kentucky, and the Graybeals and Faws trace their roots back to Germany and England. You will see this newspaper article in the scrapbook.

An excerpt from Laurel County's newspaper "The Mountain Echo" 1904. Charley Hamblin is the husband of Laura Belle Tompkins, Reece's niece.

A difficulty occurred near the Johnson School House Wednesday between Charlie Hamblin and Reese Tompkins, partners in a shingle machine, which resulted in Tompkins being seriously if not fatally cut with a knife. Hamblin gave himself up and was held in a $500 bond which he filled and was released.

Notes for Martha Ann Jones:
After Martha's mother Adaline died, she became a legal ward of Thomas Hodge and his wife Martha Elizabeth Warren. This took place on November 07, 1880. Thomas Hodge was Adaline's first husband William Hodge's brother. Also taken into guardianship at this time were Adaline's other children: John Lankford Hodge, Joseph Brannon Hodge, Dora Salmons, and George Hodge. See full documentation of custody and hearings in notes for Martha's mother, Adaline Inglehart.

Martha is found as adopted daughter of Mary Faw and David Graybeal in the 1880 census, exactly when and why she came to be with them is a mystery. It is also unclear how much time if any Martha actually did spend living with Thomas Hodge after becoming his ward in 1880. There have been many stories told of the orphan Martha being adopted by the Graybeals, but no one seems to know just what her connection to them is.

Here is Martha in the 1880 census with the Graybeals:

Martha Jones married Reece Tompkins, and Clara Graybeal her "sister" of the1880 census household, married Reece's brother Daniel Huseton Tompkins. And of course Clara and Daniel's son George married Reece and Martha's daughter Eliza.

Adaline Jones married John M. Jones 28 Jun 1868 in Laurel Co. KY. Marriage record states first marriage for John, second for Adaline, and gives the bride's birth state as MO and the groom's as KY. Witnessing the marriage is James M. Jones, his relationship to John is unknown. He may be father, brother, uncle, or cousin to John.

In looking for a connection between the Graybeals and Martha's parents,  I found the following clues, nothing so far on the Inglehart side and two possible leads for the Jones side:
1) Mary Faw's sister Charlotte married a man named Alexander Jones, they did have a son named John and one named James, but they both appear to have remained in NC, this does not match up with the marriage record, giving John Jones a birth state of KY. So unless this John Jones came to KY from NC and got married to Adaline Inglehart, then went back to NC and married Laura Brown and had more children and lived out his life there, then this would not be our Jones line. Unless Charlotte and Alexander had another child named John, or another child that is not known, or John was a nickname for something else. So far I have found no documentation on any of their known kids ever migrating to Laurel Co. KY.
2)Next door to the Graybeals in the 1870 census, we find Hugh Jones, head of household, spouse Nancy, and kids. Have not found any connection between this Jones family and our Graybeals. Nor have I found any connection between Hugh Jones and either Alexander Jones, above, or the N. B. Jones discussed below.

If there are any further clues as to Martha's Jones heritage, they may lie with the 1870 census and the will of Adaline's father George Inglehart.

In the 1870, Martha is living with her mother Adaline in the hotel of an N. B. Jones, and N. B. Jones is also named executor of George Inglehart's will. George also left some land to N. B. Jones.

In digging deeper we find that N. B. Jones is connected to the line of a Darling Jones, apparently this Darling was brother to N. B. , and their father may have been Robin Jones who married Sally McCarty. Another Darling Jones had a son named Anderson David Jones, who did have a son named John, born 1848 in KY, and this is the year Martha's father John was born according to his marriage record.  Anderson did also have a son named James M. Jones, as James was  witness to the marriage between Adaline and John Jones,  evidence seems to point toward this family. However, James and John Jones are common enough names, but Anderson did also have a son named Lankford, a name which was passed on not only to one of Martha's children, but also to Martha's brother who may or may not be the son of John Jones.  Exactly how N. B. and Anderson David Jones connect remains unclear.
