Prepared a study on the role of the United Nations in the progressive development
and codification of international law during the period 1990-1996, as well as a study on treaty-making
techniques within the United Nations system. Assisting on the update of the United Nations Repertory
of Practice.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Prof. Ingrid Persaud - The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, August
1995 to May 1997.
Researched United Nations reform in the fields of human rights and development,
as well as environmental legislation in Eastern Europe. Prepared a comparative analysis of human rights instruments both at the global and regional levels.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT - Prof. Ellen Lutz - The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, August 1996
to May 1997.
Researched aspects of international criminal law including its normative content,
individual versus state responsibility and issues of enforcement. Researched the granting of amnesty
to human rights violators and its implications for the international human rights system in Latin
America. Researched existing international early-warning systems established to monitor violations
of international humanitarian law.
INTERN - Office of Legal Affairs (Codification Division), United Nations, New York, 3 June to 2 August
1996.
Researched and contributed substantive chapters to a study of the work of the General Assembly
and its legal bodies in the codification and progressive development of international law during the
period 1990-1995. Included a review of the practice of the General Assembly in the initiation of studies
to be carried out by various principal organs of the United Nations, and an analytical examination of
studies on several topics of international law that promote progressive development and codification
of international law as well as topics that contribute to this goal.
PARTICIPANT - Inaugural Inter-American Human Rights Moot Court Competition, Washington D.C.,
27 May to 1 June 1996.
Prepared written and oral submissions based on a hypothetical
factual pattern involving systematic human rights violations in a fictitional latin American state. Argued
the merits of the case before members of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and judges
of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.

Corporate legal advisor for a sportswear company. Duties included drafting contracts, consulting
attorneys, litigating intellectual property lawsuits and overseeing the legal affairs of the company.

Compiled, indexed and analysed a complete collection of the United Nations Human Rights
Committee's reports. Researched the role of international law under the new constitutional dispensation in

STUDENT LEGAL ADVISOR - Rural Legal Clinic (University of the Witwatersrand), February to

Provided pro bono legal assistance, under the guidance of a supervising attorney, to
a rural community in Mpumalanga Province. Duties included, preparing for criminal and civil trials, representing clients at maintenance enquiries, conducting conciliation
board meetings in labour disputes, facilitating mediations and consulting with clients.

Assisted in the coordination of the Johannesburg branch of a national legal education programme.
Involved teaching law, human rights and democracy training at: schools, community centres, prisons,
old-age homes and rural areas. Organized and conducted a voter education programme in the Witwatersrand region and surrounding areas, April 1994.
