Edward did not come to America on the same ship as did his father and mother or, at least, he does not seem to be listed among the passengers. It is likely that he and his brother Thomas (and possibly Joseph) came on a different ship. Edward came to Long Island with father in 1639. They first landed at Cow Bay on North Shore but were dispossessed by Wm. Kieft, Dutch Governor. They then sailed for Peconic Bay on the South Shore at Agawam (now Southampton). He and his brother-in-law, John Bowne, together with brother-in-law, Robert Terry, husband of sister, Sarah, received a Flushing Patent in 1666 from Gov. Richard Nicholls.
Dorothy came to America with father and brother, John, who became a famous Quaker spokesman, in 1649 and to Flushing in 1651. Patent confirmed, 1666.
The John Bowne who, with other Englishmen from LI, mostly Baptists, obtained a large patent in Monmouth Co. in 1664-5, is probably no relation to the Quaker John Bowne6. That John is listed as a merchant of Middletown, NJ.
Edward was magistrate, appointed 22 Apr 1655 and 25 March 1656. He signed the Flushing Remonstrance against Stueyvesant's ban of Quakers in 1657, was arrested and imprisoned along with the clerk and sheriff and petitioned for liberty on January 9, 1658. In 1662, the Dutch West India Co. approved the Flushing claims and religious freedom. Edward and his family were Quakers. Edward was on the tax list of Southampton in 1645 (but not 1644) and Flushing, 1657. He probably moved in 1651.
Thomas of Gravesend leased 3 cows to Wm Goulder of Gravesend 26 Oct 1669. Made his mark to documents5.
In 1676, Dorothy had 12 "Landes," 30 meadows, 3 horses, 2 oxen, 16 cows, 16 swine, 30 sheep in Flushing8-p544. As executor, she produced Edward's will in court on 9 Jan 16758-p153. (ill mentioned on p 156). Sons John & Edward are listed as single men, 29 Sep 1675, Flushing.8
