One night the Skill was docked in Palermo harbor when the Luftwaffe can by for a raid on the harbor. The harbor was full of ships that night. A bomb fell from the sky and just missed the Skill and hit a motor whaleboat that was moored on the starboard side. The explosion destroyed the whaleboat and blew a hold in the side of Skill. The Skill was able to get underway and dad went to work on repairing the hole. Everett directed his repair crew to form a concrete patch for the hole and saved the ship from sinking. The patch held all the way to Algiers where the Skill was put into dry dock for repairs.
