About One Hand Typing and Keyboarding - adaptive keyboards and assistive devices.
ActiveWords - Useful program for navigating the hard drive or the Internet. Type words or write scripts to go where you want to go, open close programs, spellcheck, use boilerplate, etc. Has forum. c. $50.
Programs which have some features similar to Active Words:
DirectAccess ($40).
SlickRun Free. Works with Internet Explorer.
Antivirus, anti-ad, etc. free programs: I use this free program: Avira. I used to use: AVG To complement consider, Ad-Aware ($27 for one year) and Spybot.
Browsers: I generally use Mozilla Firefox, Navigator and Google's new browser Chrome. I am unable to reach one particular web site with these browsers so I tried an anonymous browser, which worked. Three (free) anonymous browers are xbbrowser, anonymouse and ninjacloak.
Instant
Text Forum Also contains links to major MT portals and sites
Productivity
Talk Great site hosted by Harrie. Many of the sites mentioned here are discussed on PT.
Mojo's
Rabble Rouser MT links Links only - in conjunction with Productivity
Talk.
The
Tech Desk at MT Desk, moderated by Mike DeTuri.
FTP program: Mozilla offers FireFTP which can be used to upload web pages to the Internet. The program open as a feature within Firefox. I have found it much better than WS_ftp.
Keytext 2000 - Keyboard macro/Windows automation.
Notes
and Bookmarks:
Evernote:
Very attractive free program that allows you to copy info from the web
to notate it, keep it all in one place (on your hard-drive), and find it
easily by category, date, etc.
Copernic:
Multiple search engine program and desktop search program (4 programs altogether
- c. $30 to start).
Mybookmarks:
Free internet bookmark keeper.
NVu: Open Source community's Web page creator, HTML editor. Easy to use. Free but donation requested (and well worth it). Similar to FrontPage or Dreamweaver but many times less expensive.
Perfect Keyboard - Powerful keyboard and macro typing tool. See also their Macro ToolWorks.
Photos: One company that converts printed photos to digital format in bulk is Scanmyphotos (not tried yet).
Remindo - Facebook or twitter for work. Self-described as part company social network, part online storage, part fun. (Not tried.)
Rennie's Glossaries and Files - Inexpensive glossaries/files by Gayla "Rennie" Bly, including "My Medical Word List", a useful Excel file for MT students, and Instant Text glossaries: (1) City and (2) City/State, available for selected states.
TaxACT
- A simpler, more user-friendly, and considerably less
expensive alternative to TurboTax. They partner with
J.K. Lasser. I don't plan to go back to TurboTax.
Typing Injury FAQ - Useful portal with FAQ on typing injuries and remedies.
Ultra-Edit - Very popular ('best-selling in the world') and very fine text/HTML editor.
Web Hosting: Some internet service providers give you a free web site with the service, e.g. this Earthlink web site (10 MB of storage space). If you are willing to have an ad on your site, then you can get free web hosting at portals like geocities.com. Three sites recommended in one review (2003): Page-Zone $60/year, ICDSoft $60/year, HaiSoft $36/year. But see Hosting Review, which features many different 'Top 10' lists, depending on what type of hosting you want, with detailed reviews of each provider. I went with StartLogic, partly because they use a fast, user-friendly Control Panel called VDeck.
Web Pages: Creation - NVu (see above) is a fine HTML editor. (See also Ultra-Edit above.)
Web Pages: Uploading to Internet - Mozilla offers FireFTP which can be used to upload web pages to the Internet. The program open as a feature within Firefox.
Wikipedia Free online encyclopedia. Useful but can be unreliable. Google is reported to be developing a rival resource.
WordWeb Pro - Thesaurus/dictionary, word and anagram finder. $18 to $59.
Zone Labs - ZoneAlarm firewall. www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
